Rembrandt’s earliest depiction revealed
Posted by Cecilia under: Art .
Arthur Wheelock, American art historian of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC identified the earliest depiction of Rembrandt in a painting of Jan Lievens. The painting The Cardplayers by Rembrandt’s colleague Jan Lievens was only recently discovered and sold at Sotheby’s auction in Amsterdam in 2007.

Dr Wheelock is convinced that Rembrandt was the model for the central figure wearing a blue cloak. Rembrandt was 16 years old at the time of the painting. The figure looks strikingly similar to a later portrait Jan Lievens made of his friend Rembrandt.
The painting The Cardplayers is currently on exhibit at the Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam until August 9, 2009, following its tour of Washington and Milwaukee.
