Food for health: how healthy is peanut butter?
Posted by Cecilia under: Health .
It’s no surprise that peanut butter is highly popular in the U.S. Classified as a comfort food, peanut butter can be found in about 75% of US homes. Let’s take a look at how healthy or unhealthy peanut butter really is.
Peanuts have some surprising and little known health benefits.
As a vegetable, peanuts have no cholesterol at all. Peanut protein belongs to the highly digestible proteins and is therefore the nutritional equivalent of meat and eggs for human growth and health.
Probably less known is the fact that roasted peanuts keep us young and healthy because they have a much higher concentration of antioxidants than apples and carrots. Peanuts also contain a high concentration niacin which contributes significantly to brain health and blood flow. Last but not least eating peanut butter may help to lose weight because it controls hunger by giving us a feeling of fullness.
There is one point which should make us cautious about eating too much peanut butter - the fat content. Two tablespoons of regular peanut butter contain almost 200 calories.
Healthy eating habits tell us that peanut butter is like all the other foods: variety and amount make the difference between being in or out of balance.
