World Heritage site: Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape
Posted by Cecilia under: Art; Culture .
The Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is located in central Azerbaijan. This site spans three levels of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of a semi-desert.
Gobustan has an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art depicting a way of life that disappeared long ago.
The site also houses the remains of inhabited caves and settlements reflecting intensive human use in the period following the last Ice Age.
Work is ongoing to complete the documentation and research of this site.
