Birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien
Posted by Cecilia under: Art; Culture .
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born January 3, 1892 in South Africa. J.R.R. Tolkien was not only a highly gifted writer, but he also had a seemingly limitless imagination.
During a grading session In 1930, Tolkien wrote on the back of a student’s examination “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit”. With this inauspicious sentence his book “The Hobbit” was born.
J.R.R. Tolkien once said about himself: “I’m myself a Hobbit except the size. I love gardens, trees and farmland without machines. I love to smoke a pipe and to eat well. I like to go to sleep late and to get up late and I don’t travel often.”
When his book “The Hobbit” was published in 1937 J.R.R. Tolkien was harshly criticized for the use of the word “dwarves”. It was pointed out to him that even in the Oxford English Dictionary the word appears as dwarfs. Tolkien knew how to answer: He himself had written the dictionary - meaning he’s his own authority.
One of his famous quotations can be a guide to everyone: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”
