World Heritage: The Future of Historic Cities
Posted by Cecilia under: Culture; Economy; Science .
The essential meaning of World Heritage is to make people aware of their cultural history. When we become aware of our heritage we take better care of important sites and protect them from being thoughtlessly neglected or even destroyed.
The World Heritage regularly organizes seminars to bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to explore the most pressing issues in heritage studies today.
The seminar “The Future of Historic Cities: Challenges, Contradictions, Continuities” is one of them. It will take place at the University of Cambridge, UK, 18-19 April 2009.
The main question to be discussed at this seminar will be: “how can urban cultural landscapes be preserved and sustained, challenged as they are by development and legislation?”.
Historic cities are always challenged by a changing relationship to the past through a rapidly globalizing and modernizing world.
