Mockingbirds know their enemies
Posted by Cecilia under: Nature; Science .
A new study from the University of Florida proved that mockingbirds are capable of memorizing the face of their nest attackers.
To us humans all mockingbirds look the same. For mockingbirds it’s a different story.
In a recent experiment, a student threatened a mockingbird’s on-campus nest. From then on the mockingbird was able to recognize this specific person from among hundreds of other students. Sometimes the mockingbird even attacked the researcher.
According to researchers this could be the reason why mockingbirds don’t build nests close to humans as other birds do.
Household pets could be another reason, as the study suggests, because they can also distinguish between hunting and non-hunting cats.
